Figurenland Uhlig
Figurenland Uhlig's musical angels — nearly 450 designs and counting — account for something like 80 percent of what the company sells, and the line traces back to a family workshop Emil Uhlig founded in 1895. The full story: a mill building, a wartime death, and a workshop passed hand to hand
Emil Uhlig started the workshop in 1895 in Deutscheinsiedel, and within a few years relocated it into a 17th-century water-powered mill in Seiffen — a building that, remarkably, was demolished in 1938 for road construction and rebuilt by the family in just twelve weeks. The Second World War reached the family directly: Martin Uhlig, who was running the business during the war, was killed in combat, and his brother Kurt Uhlig took over in 1946 to keep the workshop running through the difficult postwar years.
Kurt earned his master craftsman certification in 1957 and led the company through the DDR period — notably, without the outright nationalization that hit some neighboring Seiffen firms, though the sourced record doesn't spell out exactly how the family avoided that fate. Management passed to his son Frieder Uhlig in 1981, the same year Frieder's wife Karin Uhlig introduced a hand-painted Easter-figure line that broadened the workshop beyond Christmas goods. Kurt Uhlig died in 1990, the year of German reunification, which also brought a collaboration with artist Hans Reichel that produced the "musizierender Weihnachtsengel" — the musical Christmas angel that's since become the company's signature.
The fourth generation, André Uhlig, earned his own master craftsman title in 1999 and became sole proprietor in 2004, tripling the workshop's size after a full 2000 renovation. The company celebrated 125 years in 2020, and the following year reorganized as Figurenland Uhlig GmbH, with André's three daughters brought on as co-shareholders — a fifth generation already holding a stake in a business that started in a water-powered mill more than a century earlier.
